Christmas Gift Shopping Is Half the Fun
I love shopping, so naturally, Christmas shopping gives me a ridiculous amount of pleasure. I love discovering things that could make someone’s life a little easier, cozier, more stylish, more fun—or a little more techie. Preferably something they’ll unwrap and immediately want to try.
That’s what I’m looking for when I browse for Christmas gifts on Amazon: a few good surprises for the people I love.
I tend to buy what I think someone would want, rather than something they happen to need. A pair of pyjamas can absolutely be a lovely gift, but I’m usually looking for that little extra they might not think to buy themselves.
Of course, surprises can go either way. There’s nothing quite like watching someone open your carefully chosen present and seeing disappointment cross their face. Followed by, “Did you keep the receipt?” Oh dear.
There’s definitely something to be said for a wish list, especially when kids have their hearts set on something.

Anyone Else Remember the Sears Christmas Catalogue?
If you grew up with it, you’ll understand. The arrival of that catalogue was an event. My mom worked at Sears for many years, and I spent plenty of time going through those pages, putting together a Christmas list that was anything but small.
Those pages were well searched, believe me.
I’ll admit I was spoiled at Christmas. My mom loved giving gifts, and I think she enjoyed herself a little too much. We seemed to unwrap presents forever, with wrapping paper piled high around us.
Looking back, I can see exactly where I got it from. When my son was younger, I carried on that tradition. He was spoiled too, and I probably had just as much fun choosing everything as he did opening it.
A Quieter Christmas, but Still Just as Special
These days, I’ve toned things down considerably. Without kids in the house, Christmas morning feels different, but I still love it.
Pushing the button on the coffee maker, pulling on a pair of sweats and settling onto the couch with coffee and a couple of presents to open—it still feels magical. A quieter version of those childhood Christmases, but special all the same.
If that sounds like your kind of Christmas too, I’ve shared more of those little touches in my cozy Christmas morning ideas. There’s something lovely about leaving a little time to enjoy the morning before the kitchen gets busy.
And I still get so much pleasure from finding a gift that makes someone smile.
With that in mind, this guide brings together Christmas gift ideas for people who love their homes, enjoy a little everyday luxury, appreciate a useful gadget or are simply fun to shop for. Think cozy comforts, stylish home finds, kitchen treats and a few surprises worth considering.
You might even find something for your own wish list. Mine has never been particularly short.

Christmas Gifts for People Who Love Cooking & Hosting
Some people are so much fun to buy for. The friend who sets a beautiful table even when you’re only coming over for takeout. The person who takes their morning coffee very seriously. The cook who’s planning dinner while the rest of us are still deciding what to have for lunch.
I like gifts that fit those little habits. Something they’ll enjoy using, with a bit of personality or an extra touch they wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves.
For the one who loves having everyone over: A beautiful wood serving board is a lovely place to start. Pair it with cheese knives or a favourite local cheese, and it feels like a gift you’ve put some thought into. Pretty ceramic mugs or beaded drink coasters would be fun for someone who enjoys all the little table details, too.
For the cook who enjoys trying something different: A ceramic garlic grater caught my attention. It’s a smaller gift you could pair with a good olive oil and a loaf of crusty bread. Electric salt and pepper grinders are another option for someone who likes a useful kitchen gadget—although I’d check whether they prefer their trusty manual set first.
For the person whose coffee always goes cold: An Ember temperature-control mug could be worth considering. I’d check the size and care instructions before choosing one. For a simpler gift, I love the idea of a ceramic mug with their favourite coffee tucked alongside it. Add a few chocolates and I’d be quite happy opening that myself.
For the cocktail enthusiast: A pair of lovely whiskey glasses or a cocktail smoker kit could make an evening at home feel a little more special. I’d choose according to what they actually drink, rather than what I think would look nice on their bar cart. Tempting as that may be.
You don’t need to put together an enormous gift basket. One well-chosen item with something delicious beside it can feel every bit as thoughtful.

Thoughtful Christmas Gifts on Amazon: Home, Beauty & Fun Finds
You probably know someone who is always moving things around, adding another pillow or finding the perfect little piece for a shelf. I understand these people. I am these people.
Shopping for someone who loves their home can be so much fun, but I do try to keep their taste in mind. Something I love won’t necessarily be something they want sitting on their coffee table.
My first thought is a beautiful throw blanket. Something soft, in a colour that works with their home, that they can pull over themselves while reading or watching a movie. Add a book you think they’d enjoy, and you’ve made it a little more personal. A pair of cozy slippers tucked alongside it wouldn’t hurt, either.
A decorative box is another lovely idea. I’m drawn to wood, woven textures and interesting patterns—something pretty enough to leave out, with somewhere to tuck those little things that otherwise collect on a table. I’d choose something they can enjoy all year rather than a piece that needs packing away after Christmas.
For someone who loves candles, a candle warmer lamp could be a fun surprise. Some look like little accent lamps, which appeals to the decor lover in me. Pair one with a compatible candle in a scent you know they enjoy, and it feels like a complete gift.
Fragrance is where I’d be a little careful, though. I might love a warm, woodsy scent while someone else prefers something fresh—or no fragrance at all. Knowing their favourites makes shopping much easier.
And if you’re unsure about their decorating style, I’d lean toward a cozy comfort rather than a statement piece. A beautiful blanket is easier to find a place for than a large vase they feel obligated to display every time you visit. We’ve all been there.

Little Luxuries: Christmas Gifts for Her
This is the section where shopping for someone else can easily turn into finding a few things for myself. A lovely pair of earrings, something cozy, a little beauty treat… I’m easily distracted.
These are also the kinds of gifts I enjoy choosing for a friend, my mom or someone who rarely treats herself. Something that says, “I thought you’d love this.”
Something Cozy, with a Little Extra
I know I mentioned my feelings about buying pyjamas simply because someone needs a pair. But there’s always room for something cozy that feels like a treat.
Soft slippers in her favourite colour or a lovely robe she’d enjoy putting on after a shower could fit the bill. I’d think about what she actually wears, though. Open-toe slippers aren’t much of a comfort to someone whose feet are always freezing.
A silk pillowcase is another little luxury worth considering. I’d check her pillow size and the washing instructions first. Beautiful is lovely; creating more laundry work for someone is less exciting.
Beauty Treats She’ll Be Excited to Open
A favourite lip balm, body cream or shower oil can make a lovely smaller gift, especially when you already know what she likes. Summer Fridays lip balm, L’Occitane almond body products or a travel-sized set from a favourite brand are a few ideas to browse.
I’d rather give someone a product she’s delighted to replenish than guess at a whole new skincare routine. And for anything scented, I’d do a little investigating first. What smells wonderful to me might be far too strong for someone else.
Unless she’s specifically asked, I’d probably leave anything labelled “anti-ageing” out of the Christmas bag. I’m aiming for “you deserve a treat,” without accidentally sending another message.
A Little Jewellery—or Somewhere to Keep It
Simple gold-tone hoops, a delicate necklace or a pretty bracelet could be a thoughtful choice for someone who enjoys accessories.
This is where I’d pay attention to what she already wears. Does she reach for gold or silver? Small earrings or something bold? Buying for her style makes the gift feel much more personal.
A travel jewellery case would be a lovely option, too, especially for someone who’s always untangling necklaces at the bottom of her bag. Add a little pair of earrings inside and there’s your surprise.
Hair Tools Belong on the Wish List
A styling tool could be an exciting gift for someone who enjoys doing her hair, but I’d want a few clues before choosing one. The tool she’s been talking about is a much better starting point than whichever one happens to catch my eye.
You don’t need to fill a huge gift bag. Two or three carefully chosen things—a favourite beauty treat, cozy socks and a handwritten card—can feel every bit as special.

Christmas Gift Ideas for Him—Beyond Another Pair of Socks
Some men are wonderfully easy to buy for. They tell you exactly what they want, right down to the model number. Others say, “I don’t need anything,” which is lovely for them and absolutely no help to the person doing the shopping.
I’d start with what he enjoys, what he wears out and those little things he mentions but never gets around to buying. There’s usually a clue somewhere.
For the One Who Appreciates Being Comfortable
A good pair of slippers might not sound terribly exciting until you’re wearing them on a cold morning. Fireside by Dearfoams slippers are one option in my gift collection worth a look.
I’d check the sizing, sole and care instructions before choosing. And if his current pair are barely holding together but he insists they’re “still perfectly good,” you may already have your answer.
For Someone Who Enjoys a Good Whiskey
A pair of lovely whiskey glasses could make a thoughtful gift for someone who enjoys settling down with a drink. Add a bottle you know he likes, if that suits your budget, and you don’t need much else.
A monogrammed ice cube mould is another fun little extra. Does his ice need an initial? Probably not. But Christmas allows for a few things nobody strictly needs.
I’d choose one or two pieces he’d actually use rather than an enormous set that needs its own cupboard.
For the Man Who Likes to Keep Things Tidy
A grooming tool such as the Philips Norelco OneBlade could be useful if it suits his routine—or he’s mentioned wanting one.
This is where I’d pay attention to what he already uses. Some men are quite loyal to their shaver, and Christmas morning might not be the time to suggest a new approach to his face.
Check the model, included attachments and replacement blade costs before choosing.
For the Sports Fan
A football history book could be a more personal choice for someone who enjoys revisiting memorable games and favourite teams. If you’re considering a personalized version, check exactly what can be customized and allow time for delivery.
For a golfer with a sense of humour, funny golf socks could make a small addition. Yes, I know what I said about another pair of socks. These can have a pass if they’ll make him laugh—and he’ll actually wear them.
The gift doesn’t have to be wildly original. If it suits him and shows you’ve been listening, that counts for far more than buying something impressive that never leaves the box.

Fun Christmas Gifts for the Ones Who Love a Good Gadget
Useful Christmas Gifts for the Ones Who Love a Good Gadget
There’s usually someone on the Christmas list who loves a gadget. They want to know what it does, how it works and whether they can have it set up before breakfast is finished.
I like finding something that fits what they already enjoy. Reading, taking pictures, cooking or keeping everyone organized—a useful gadget feels much more thoughtful when there’s a reason you chose it.
For the Person Who’s Always Reading
A Kindle Paperwhite could be a lovely gift for someone who’s always starting another book. I’d find out whether they already have an e-reader and what they like about it before choosing one.
If they’re already happily settled with their Kindle, a compatible page turner or hand strap might be a fun little extra. Check the exact model and how the accessory works first. I’d rather do that bit of homework than give someone a Christmas troubleshooting project.
For Someone Who Loves Their Family Photos
A digital picture frame is one of those gifts that can feel both useful and personal. I love the idea of having favourite family moments on display instead of leaving them buried among thousands of pictures on a phone.
Before choosing one, I’d check how photos are added, whether it needs Wi-Fi and whether any features require a subscription. If you can help get it set up with a few favourite photos, even better.
For someone who enjoys making little prints for albums or sharing with friends, a Fujifilm Instax Mini Link smartphone printer is another idea. It prints photos from a compatible phone, so I’d check compatibility and include the correct film. Nobody wants to open something fun and then discover they can’t use it yet.
For the One Keeping Everyone Organized
A digital calendar, such as a Skylight, could appeal to someone juggling appointments, activities and a household full of plans.
This is one I’d want a few hints about first. Some people love having everything on a screen; others are quite attached to their paper calendar. I’d also check the setup, available space and any subscription costs before buying.
For the Backyard Cook
A meat thermometer or a rolling grill basket could be a useful surprise for someone who enjoys cooking outdoors. Smaller than buying them a whole new barbecue, and considerably easier to wrap.
For a wireless thermometer, I’d check how it connects, which phone or app it needs and whether it suits the way they cook. If they’ve been mentioning a particular one for months, I’d take the hint. Sometimes they’ve already done the shopping research for us.
The best gadget gift doesn’t have to do twenty different things. If it makes something they enjoy a little easier—or more fun—that’s a good place to start.

Creative Christmas Gifts for Someone Who Needs a Screen Break
I love the idea of giving someone a reason to put their phone down and get lost in something for a while. Preferably something more enjoyable than trying to remember why they walked into the kitchen.
A puzzle, a little painting project or something to build could be a lovely Christmas gift for someone who enjoys a quiet afternoon. And after the shopping, cooking and general carrying on of December, a quiet afternoon sounds like a gift all on its own.
For the Reader Who Might Enjoy Building a Little Bookshop
A miniature book nook kit caught my attention. You assemble a tiny scene that sits among the books on a shelf—some are little shops, libraries or other wonderfully detailed places.
I can see the appeal for someone who loves books, miniatures and a project they can take their time with. I’d check the difficulty level and what supplies are included, though. There’s a fine line between “what a lovely way to spend an afternoon” and “why am I holding a piece of furniture smaller than my fingernail?”
For the Puzzle Person
A beautiful jigsaw puzzle can be a thoughtful gift, especially when the picture means something to the person receiving it. A favourite destination, somewhere they dream of visiting or artwork they’d happily leave on the table for a few days.
An Italy-themed puzzle would certainly catch my eye. A little imaginary holiday, without having to weigh the suitcase.
For someone who puzzles regularly, a rotating puzzle board could be worth considering, too. I’d check its measurements and the puzzle sizes it accommodates. Ideally, it helps them enjoy their hobby while leaving somewhere for everyone else to eat dinner.
For Someone Who’d Love to Paint—With a Little Guidance
A paint-by-numbers kit could be a fun choice for someone who likes the idea of painting but appreciates being told where the colours go. I understand the appeal. Sometimes it’s lovely to enjoy the process without having to invent a masterpiece.
I’d choose a design that suits their taste, whether that’s a landscape, flowers or a playful cocktail print. Check that the paints and brushes are included, along with whether the canvas comes framed or needs stretching.
A cozy colouring book is another smaller option. Pair it with suitable pencils or markers, and you’ve given them a little activity they can settle into whenever they feel like it.
My only rule? Choose a project they’d enjoy, rather than a hobby you’ve decided they should take up. Christmas is busy enough without being assigned homework.

A Little Thought Goes a Long Way
As much as I love Christmas shopping, I’ve learned that I don’t need to buy nearly as much as I once did. I still get carried away occasionally, but these days I’m more interested in finding a few things someone will be excited to open.
Sometimes that’s a surprise they never would have thought to ask for. Other times, it’s the exact thing they’ve been dropping hints about since September. Either way, watching them smile is still my favourite part.
And if you find a little something for yourself while browsing? Well, I certainly won’t judge.
