I’ve realized that I practically live in a capsule wardrobe—even though I’ve never officially called it that.
On an average day, I tend to gravitate toward the same simple outfit formula: a pair of denim, a T-shirt or long-sleeved top, a good jacket, and either boots or sneakers. That’s me in a nutshell. No fuss, nothing overly complicated—just clothes that feel comfortable and make me feel like myself.
I own other things, of course, but my closet makes it pretty obvious which pieces I genuinely love. I reach for the same reliable basics because I know they fit, they work together, and I feel good wearing them. And honestly, if an outfit requires too much thought first thing in the morning, I’m probably not going to wear it very often.
That’s why a good capsule wardrobe is so valuable to me. It isn’t about owning the fewest clothes possible or creating a perfectly colour-coordinated closet. It’s about having flattering, versatile wardrobe essentials that make getting dressed easier.
I would like to add a few new pieces to my wardrobe this year, but I don’t want to buy anything that will simply hang in the closet with the tags still attached. The basics matter—but they need to be the right basics.
These are the seven capsule wardrobe essentials I believe earn their place in a closet because they’re comfortable, easy to mix and match, and practical enough to wear repeatedly.
One unexpected benefit of relying on versatile wardrobe basics is that packing becomes much easier too. If you’re planning a sunny trip, here’s what I pack for a warm-weather getaway—without bringing half my closet along with me.
👉 “what to pack for a warm-weather getaway”

1. The White T-Shirt I Wear on Repeat
A good white T-shirt might not be the most exciting thing in my closet, but it’s easily one of the hardest-working. I wear mine with denim and sneakers on casual days, layer it under a blazer or jacket, and tuck it into a midi skirt when I want to look a little more polished. It’s simple, comfortable, and requires very little thought—which is exactly how I like to get dressed these days.
The challenge is finding one that isn’t too thin, clingy, or completely shapeless. I look for soft cotton with enough weight to hang nicely and a neckline that holds its shape. If you’re updating your everyday basics, this organic cotton T-shirt is a versatile option that would work with almost everything in a capsule wardrobe.
My tip: Choose the fit you’ll genuinely wear. A slightly relaxed T-shirt works best for me because I can wear it loose, partially tuck it into jeans, or layer it comfortably under a jacket.

2. A Long-Sleeve Top or Lightweight Knit—My Favourite Layering Essential
Once the weather cools down, I reach for long-sleeve tops constantly. Ribbed, fitted, Henley-style, crew neck or V-neck—I like them all. Honestly, how can you go wrong? They’re just as simple to style as a T-shirt, but they provide a little more warmth and arm coverage when you need it.
A long-sleeve top looks complete on its own but also layers beautifully under a blazer, jacket or vest without adding too much bulk. If I get warm and take off the outer layer, I still feel comfortable and put together. They work with practically everything too: jeans, tailored trousers, skirts and even shorts during that in-between weather when the temperature can’t seem to make up its mind.
A more fitted top is especially useful under a jacket or with wide-leg bottoms, while a slightly relaxed knit looks great partially tucked into denim. Neutral colours will give you the most versatility, but a stripe, rich fall colour or interesting neckline can keep a simple outfit from feeling too basic.
My tip: Look for soft, breathable fabric with enough stretch to hold its shape. A long-sleeve top should feel comfortable enough to wear all day and light enough to layer without constantly adjusting it.
I’ve been gathering more affordable pieces that can make a simple fall wardrobe feel updated without replacing everything you already own. From versatile layering tops and jackets to shoes, bags and accessories, these are the fall fashion finds that look expensive and have caught my eye this season.

3. The Blazer That Pulls Everything Together
I’ve always loved a good fitted blazer, especially when I was working. These days, I still appreciate a little structure, but I’m just as likely to reach for an oversized blazer or a statement jacket when I want to give a simple outfit more personality.
A blazer doesn’t have to feel formal or office-like. I’ll wear one with a white T-shirt and denim, then add ankle boots, sneakers or Mary Jane flats and a great bag. It’s an easy outfit formula that looks stylish and pulled together without requiring much effort—which is always a win for me.
If you love a little structure, this tailored blazer is a classic option that can be dressed up or down. For a more relaxed, modern look, I also found this oversized blazer, which would look especially good with a fitted T-shirt, denim and sneakers.
My tip: Choose a blazer that layers comfortably over a T-shirt or lightweight sweater. Whether you prefer fitted, relaxed or oversized, it should work with the clothes you already reach for.
If you’re anything like me, jeans are probably the starting point for most of your everyday outfits. The right denim style can completely change how a blazer fits and how balanced the entire outfit looks. If you’re ready to update your denim, I’ve broken down 10 fall denim styles and exactly how to wear them, including the shoes, tops and jackets that work with each one.
Since jeans are usually the starting point for my blazer outfits, I’ve also shared 10 fall denim styles and exactly how to wear them if you’re wondering which cut works with your favourite tops, jackets and shoes.

4. Classic Denim—The Staple I Wear Most
I don’t think I could choose one favourite denim wash because I honestly love them all. Dark wash can look a little more polished, while faded and lighter washes feel relaxed and casual. Give me a great-fitting pair of jeans, a T-shirt, a jacket and comfortable shoes, and I’m happy.
Right now, I’m taking a bit of a break from skinny jeans and gravitating toward straight-leg, bootcut, barrel and wide-leg styles. But I’m fairly certain skinny jeans will eventually make their way back—with some sort of updated twist. That’s fashion! Everything seems to circle back around eventually, which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.
Even when I don’t need to buy anything, I still love looking at new denim styles and seeing how other women are wearing them. Sometimes a different cuff, shoe or jacket is all the inspiration I need to make an older pair of jeans feel new again.
My tip: Don’t worry too much about which denim style you’re “supposed” to wear. Choose a wash and silhouette that feel comfortable, work with your favourite shoes and make you want to wear them repeatedly.
I’ve spent far too much time looking through denim lately—even though I probably don’t need another pair! Rather than choosing only one wash or fit, I gathered several of the fall denim styles that have caught my eye, including straight-leg, bootcut, barrel and wide-leg jeans. Some are timeless, some feel a little more current, but they’re all styles I could see working with the basics already in my closet.

5. Tailored Trousers—Polished Without Trying Too Hard
Next to jeans, tailored trousers might be the perfect pant for me. I love them! They’re timeless, stylish and incredibly easy to dress up or down. With the right rise, cut and length, I think they can work beautifully on just about anyone.
I’ll wear tailored trousers with sneakers, mules or flats for a more relaxed outfit, then switch to heels or ankle boots when I want to dress them up. They work for the office, date night, lunch, travelling or simply running errands. Add a T-shirt, lightweight knit or blazer and you’re done. You really don’t have to think too much about the outfit—which is always a win for me.
The fabrics available now make them even better. Stretch blends, soft knits and drapey materials can feel almost as comfortable as lounge pants while still looking polished and put together. They’re proof that looking dressed up doesn’t necessarily mean being uncomfortable.
My own tailored trousers didn’t come from Amazon, but this pair of tailored trousers is my favourite Amazon option based on the details. It comes in several length choices—which can make such a difference in how trousers fit—and it has faux back pockets for that clean, tailored finish. Both features are definite must-haves for me.
My tip: Pay attention to the inseam as much as the waist size. The right length helps tailored trousers fall properly over sneakers, flats or heels and can completely change the overall look.
If easy layers and neutral colours are your style too, I’ve gathered more neutral fall fashion finds you can wear on repeat, including knits, jackets, trousers, sneakers and accessories.

6. A Versatile Jacket or Trench—The Layer That Changes Everything
A trench coat can add so much to an outfit. Mine has finally worn out, so I may be on the hunt for a good replacement this fall. I’ve always loved a classic longer trench, but the shorter and cropped styles showing up everywhere this year have definitely caught my attention too.
Calling one jacket my capsule staple may not be entirely honest, though. If you could see my hall closet, you’d understand. I have several jackets—probably too many—so this may be less of a wardrobe staple and more of an addiction. Okay, jackets and footwear. We’ll get to the shoes soon enough!
What I love about a trench is its versatility. A longer trench can be worn over a dress one day and a comfortable lounge set the next. It works just as easily with jeans, tailored trousers or a midi skirt. The shorter versions feel a little more casual and current, especially with wide-leg jeans, sneakers or trousers. Both can completely change a simple outfit without requiring much effort.
I haven’t bought either of these yet, but I’ve been eyeing two very different options on Amazon. This classic long trench coat has the timeless shape and extra coverage I love, while this short bomber jacket offers a more modern, relaxed way to wear the look.
My tip: Think about the proportions of the clothes you wear most. A longer trench creates a polished, streamlined look, while a shorter style works especially well with high-waisted, wide-leg or looser-fitting bottoms.

7. The Little Black Dress—A Capsule Classic, Even If It Isn’t Me
I’m going to be honest: I almost never wear a little black dress. I did wear one on a cruise once, but I changed out of it fairly quickly after dinner. Maybe it was the wrong style, the wrong fabric or simply the wrong length. I’m still not entirely sure.
I can certainly understand why the little black dress is considered a capsule wardrobe staple. It’s one of the easiest outfits to put together. Add heels, flats or even flip-flops, choose a statement handbag and a few accessories, and you’re done. Black is timeless, works for practically any occasion and always looks so cute on other women.
One of my friends wore a black dress this past weekend—I think it was from Halara—and it looked so good on her. It fit beautifully through the bust, had ruching across the midsection and hit at exactly the right length. She wore it with flip-flops, which I loved because it made the entire outfit feel stylish but relaxed.
On me, however, dresses always seem to hit directly at my calf—which isn’t my favourite area to emphasize. I try them on, look in the mirror and somehow end up putting them straight back on the rack every time. Give me a skirt any day. Better yet, give me a pair of tailored trousers!
Still, I’m going to Cabo this fall, so perhaps this is finally the year. Who knows? I may end up arriving in the same dress as my friend.
Of all the options I’ve looked at, this little black dress on Amazon is the one that caught my eye. I haven’t tried it yet, but the shape looks comfortable, easy to accessorize and casual enough to wear with flat sandals. If a little black dress is ever going to convince me, this one may have a chance.
My tip: Pay close attention to where the hem falls. Even a difference of a few inches can change how you feel in a dress, so look for a length that suits your height, your favourite shoes and—most importantly—your comfort level.

8. The Midi Skirt—The Dress Alternative I Actually Wear
A midi skirt is incredibly versatile—at least it is for me. I had one that I wore for a couple of decades, which probably says everything. When I was working, it felt as though I wore it almost every week during the summer.
It was black, fitted and made from what I believe was a comfortable polyester blend. The hem fell below my calf and was asymmetrical, which is kind of funny when I think about it now. Somehow, the shape and exact length worked for me. I normally styled it with a tank and a sweater or blazer, then added sandals or flip-flops. It was one of those reliable pieces I could put on without thinking too much about it.
Oddly enough, I recently bought another fitted midi skirt over the weekend—and I already know it’s coming to Cabo with me. Maybe I’ll forget about buying a little black dress and bring this instead! It looks great with a simple tank and flip-flops but can easily be dressed up with heels, a great bag and jewelry.
Apparently, I have a midi-skirt type.
That may be why skirts work better for me than dresses. I can choose exactly where the waist sits, change the top and adjust the proportions until the outfit feels right. Midi skirts come in so many fabrics, fits and patterns too. A satin style feels dressier, a fitted knit is comfortable and easy to pack, and a flowy printed skirt is perfect for warm weather. Add sneakers and a blazer for a polished casual look, or heels for dinner.
The skirt I purchased didn’t come from Amazon, but this fitted midi skirt looks very similar. I haven’t tried this exact one, but the streamlined shape and easy styling make it a good option if you like the same type of midi skirt I do.
My tip: With a fitted midi skirt, look for stretch, a comfortable waistband and enough room to walk easily. A side or back slit can make a big difference, especially if you plan to wear it while travelling or sightseeing.

9. Everyday Sneakers—The Shoes I Can’t Stop Buying
I think it’s safe to say I’m obsessed with footwear—especially sneakers. I have at least ten pairs, although I may have lost count. Some I wear constantly, some I don’t reach for anymore and a few pairs in perfectly good condition have finally made their way to the donation pile.
I’ve even bought the same sneaker in three or four different colours or textures. Jason thinks I have a footwear addiction. What can I say? If the shoe fits!
Since retiring, I’ve slowed down with the shoe shopping—or at least I have in my mind. Admittedly, I bought another pair over the weekend, but they were on sale, so naturally I had to. The low-profile shape is so popular this year, and this particular style was unlike anything I’d seen before. That was exciting to me—and, again, they were on sale!
Sneakers, running shoes, runners or trainers—whatever you like to call them—are another fashion category I can’t stop looking at. I usually try to find something a little different, but that becomes difficult when social-media algorithms show you the same styles repeatedly after one innocent click. Before long, every pair in my feed starts looking suspiciously tempting.
All I can say is that a good sneaker is everything. In my opinion, they go with almost everything too: jeans, tailored trousers, lounge sets, shorts, dresses and midi skirts. They keep a polished outfit comfortable and can make something dressier feel much more relaxed and wearable.
I didn’t purchase this particular pair, but if I were choosing sneakers from Amazon, this low-profile sneaker is the one I would consider. I like the streamlined shape and the fact that it could work with so many of the outfits already in my closet.
My tip: Style matters, but comfort still wins. Check the cushioning, support, sizing reviews and return policy—because even the cutest sneakers won’t become capsule staples if they hurt your feet.

10. Mary Jane Flats—The Shoes I Didn’t Expect to Want
At first, I wasn’t a big fan of Mary Jane flats. Then, for some reason, I decided I needed a pair.
A friend recently wore simple black leather Mary Janes with longer, light-wash baggy denim shorts, an asymmetrical satin-and-lace top and a shrug. The entire outfit looked so cute. I had already been eyeing a pair, but seeing hers styled that way completely solidified it for me.
Now I’m convinced Mary Janes will look perfect with the oversized baggy jeans I also recently purchased. The sales these past two weekends have been difficult to resist. I think I may need some help. Shopping therapy, perhaps? LOL.
I love how Mary Janes can add a sweet or sophisticated touch to an outfit that feels edgier everywhere else. Of course, it’s the person putting everything together who creates the overall look, but the shoes can still make a statement.
They’re surprisingly versatile too. Wear them with jeans, trousers, long shorts, skirts or dresses for work, date night or a girls’ weekend. They’re also a great alternative when you want a break from sneakers. I can’t believe I just said that!
Depending on the design, Mary Janes can look sporty, sweet, sophisticated or completely neutral. I’m also told they’re comfortable, which makes them even more tempting. I think I’m leaning toward leather—but then I see a sporty pair and change my mind again. That’s my problem. I change my mind a lot!
Right now, this pair of Mary Jane flats on Amazon is one of my top choices. I haven’t purchased them yet, but I like the simple shape and can picture wearing them with baggy denim, tailored trousers and a midi skirt.
My tip: Look beyond the colour and pay attention to the toe shape, strap placement and cushioning. A flat shoe isn’t automatically comfortable, so check the sizing reviews before choosing your pair.

11. An Everyday Handbag or Tote—The Finishing Touch
I’ve carried the same purse for the past two summers. It was so cute, and I received plenty of compliments on it, but sadly, I think it’s time to let it go. The woven material is starting to fray, and little pieces are now falling off. I’m not completely disappointed because it served me well for two full summers—but we’re heading into fall, which means I can finally bring out my fall handbags!
I don’t have a huge fall collection, but I love the bags I do own. Naturally, I’d also love to purchase a new one, although I’m trying very hard not to. Hopefully, I don’t stumble across a great sale. We’ve already established how well that worked with my recent shoe purchases!
A good handbag can add so much character to an outfit. Like everything in fashion, it can say something about your personality and completely change the look of simple jeans, trousers or a dress.
My problem is deciding what I actually want. Do I choose an oversized tote that can carry everything, or a smaller bag that holds only the essentials—my phone, lipstick and lip liner? For the past couple of years, I’ve sometimes carried a small clutch that held all my cards and, luckily, my phone too. Unfortunately, its zipper has now broken, so perhaps I can justify replacing that as well.
There are simply too many beautiful bags, and once again, I can’t make up my mind. Right now, though, I’m leaning toward something larger and relaxed. This oversized everyday tote on Amazon is the style that has caught my attention. I haven’t purchased it, but it looks roomy, versatile and easy to carry with the clothing I wear most often.
If you’re still deciding too, I’ve rounded up 10 chocolate-brown purses that look designer but cost much less, with options ranging from practical crossbody bags to oversized totes.
My tip: Empty your current handbag before choosing a new one. Seeing what you genuinely carry every day makes it much easier to decide whether you need a roomy tote, a practical crossbody or a smaller bag for the essentials.
Final Thoughts: A Capsule Wardrobe Should Still Feel Like You
I love fashion. I probably always will. Even when I don’t need to buy anything, I can’t resist looking—whether I’m wandering through a store or scrolling online. For me, seeing new colours, fabrics and outfit ideas is part of the fun. Sometimes I buy something, and sometimes I simply leave with inspiration for styling what I already own.
A capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean you’re limited to a certain number of pieces or that you have to stop enjoying trends. It’s simply a reliable foundation of clothing that fits your lifestyle, feels comfortable and works together easily.
Those essentials will look different for everyone. Mine will always include denim, long-sleeve tops, tailored trousers, jackets and—clearly—more than one pair of sneakers. A little black dress may never become one of my most-worn pieces, although Cabo could still surprise me!
My goal isn’t to stop shopping altogether. Let’s be realistic. I simply want to make more thoughtful choices and add pieces that I’ll actually wear instead of leaving them hanging in the closet with the tags attached.
What clothing item could you never leave out of your capsule wardrobe? And is there one “essential” everyone else loves that simply doesn’t work for you? I’d love to know.
